ROXBURY, NJ - A Roxbury family was forced out of their home today when a fire tore through their house in Succasunna, a home they only recently occupied.
The fire started at around 4:45 p.m. at the 2-story house on Ridge Road in Succasunna and quickly spread. Neighbors said the owners, who escaped uninjured, told them the fire began in the garage.
The displaced homeowners moved into the house about two weeks ago, according to neighbors who were sheltering the distraught people. They said the couple has two children, believed to be a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, but no pets.
Roxbury firefighters at the scene battled not only raging flames but also strong wind and temperatures in the teens. Despite the use of a ladder truck from Roxbury Fire Co. 1 in Succasunna, which pummeled the house from above with water, flames continued to blaze through the home's roof a half-hour after firefighters arrived at the scene.
