SUMMIT, NJ - Junior Olivia Lawlor scored seven of her game-high 21 points during a first-quarter onslaught that saw the Hilltoppers build a 16-point lead, and the Summit High School Girls Basketball Team went on to defeat Roselle Catholic 50-36 at the Main Gym. The victory lifts the Maroon and White's record to 8-2 on the season.
Lawlor also snared nine rebounds, leaving her just one 'board shy of a Double-Double. Sophomore Samantha Mecurio scored 10 points and contributed six assists plus two rebounds in a spiffy performance for The 'Top.
The really live part of the wire-to-wire win was an 18-2 first quarter that set the tone -- and pretty much settled the outcome -- for the remaining 24 minutes of basketball. After the Lions clawed back to claim the second stanza 12-9, Summit exited the halftime locker room and delivered an 11-4 verdict which gave them a 20-point advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
The Hilltoppers will be back on the hardwood March 1, making the trip to Union City to face the Soaring Eagles. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
