WEST ORANGE, NJ — Despite the sudden chill in the air on Wednesday, the award-winning West Orange High School Orchestra forced spring to come early thanks to an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary music ranging from the Baroque period to retro pop and rock.

Under the direction of Dr. Elena Peres, the annual Spring Orchestra concert featured various ensembles, including the 9th Grade Orchestra, String Orchestra, Royal Strings Orchestra, Royal String Ensemble and the Honors Chamber Orchestra.

The concert also featured Royal String Ensemble members, violist Ayush Natain and cellist Danielle Berger, who played a duet of Johan Sabastian Bach’s “Two Voice Invention No. 1.”

In addition, members of the band, directed by Erin Lagatic and Lewis Kelly, pianist William Farley and bassist Benjamin Rubens (a West Orange alumnus) also provided support to enhance some songs during the concert.

The concert concluded with a grand finale of familiar songs played by all five high school orchestral ensembles. These included upbeat numbers like “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes and “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri (co-written by David Hodges).
