The practice of forgiveness is our most important contribution to the healing of the world.
Did you know that you cannot truly forgive anyone else until you forgive yourself? Religious dogma often concentrates on forgiving others and makes little emphasis on the forgiveness of oneself. The result is that we suffer and even become martyrs in the process of trying to rid ourselves of resentment toward others.
Forgiveness is not about suffering. It is about liberation. Forgiveness is not about transferring resentment. It is about cleansing ourselves of it. How do we cleanse and become free? We begin from the inside out. We intone loving thoughts toward ourselves. We take care of our bodies—eat right and get regular exercise. We make our environments clean and healthy. And, we feed our spirits. Today, heal and forgive yourself before you attempt to do so for someone else—otherwise, it just won’t be authentic.
