TRENTON, NJ - Gov. Chris Christie announced to state lawmakers his intention to nominate eight new Superior Court judges in Essex County. The list includes former Berkeley Heights Mayor David Cohen and current Township Administrator Linda Cavanaugh of West Orange.
The Essex County courts has the busiest courts in the state according to The Star Ledger, and the most judicial vacancies with 21.
Backlog in the Essex County courts has continued for some time with matrimonial and complex civil trials being suspended. Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner appointed judges from other counties to sit in on a temporary basis, according to The Star-Ledger.
Cohen living in Union County is being nominated for a statewide seat that would be designated to Essex County.
"I am happy for the both David and Linda," said Berkeley Heights Mayor Joe Bruno. "They are well qualified and well balanced people who will be an asset to the judiciary. I have been very fortunate to work with both of them and wish them all the best."
