Former East Orange City Councilman Stephen S. Thomas Passes Away at Home


EAST ORANGE, NJ - Former First Ward Councilman Stephen S. Thomas passed away at his home in East Orange on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014.

Thomas served as a councilman from 1986-1989 and from 1990-1993 during Mayor Cardell Cooper’s administration, and was elected as chairperson in 1993. Prior to his election to City Council, Thomas was appointed by Mayor William S. Hart, Jr. to serve as the first Director for the City’s Department of Neighborhood Facilities when the Fellowship Civic Center opened its doors in 1972. He also served as Director of East Orange’s Model Cities Program.

Thomas was renowned as a public servant and won several commendations from various civic organizations for his involvement. As a graduate of East Orange High School, Thomas was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football and basketball. He was also the brother of the late William S. Thomas, who served as councilman for the Fifth Ward.
