EAST ORANGE, NJ - Some say you can never go home again; but long time East Orange resident and author Leroy Bennett begs to differ. After decades on the road Leroy has returned to the home of his childhood with a ton of experience and a story to tell.
Today at 1;00 pm Bennett will showcase his book, Hotel California at the East Orange Farmer’s Market. Hotel California is a biographical account of Leroy’s experience with homelessness.
Bennett is a graduate of Clifford Scott in East Orange, earned a college degree and was on track to a successful career before experiencing a five year stint of homelessness in the southeast. When questioned what caused this financial collapse, Bennett was extremely open and candid. “When my mother died, I was emotionally unable to handle the thought of life without her.” I just handled things poorly when she was no longer there.”
Unlike many individuals that suffer from drugs and mental illness, Bennett says he didn’t do drugs or suffer from mental illness. But after the death of his mother and early on during his time being homeless he admits he became extremely depressed.
But Hotel California is about his path out of homelessness and finally back to East Orange to share a story that is all too common in our area.
All are welcomed to come meet, greet and get a signed copy of his book.
