Former Leaders of Plainfield Street Gang Indicted

September 25, 2013 at 12:26 PM

NEWARK, NJ – Three former leaders of a Plainfield-based branch of the violent international street gang “La Mara Salvatrucha” – including its founding member – are charged with racketeering and murder in an indictment that also charges 11 other alleged members of the gang with related crimes, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced on Wednesday.

Santos Reyes-Villatoro, a/k/a “Mousey,” allegedly founded the “Plainfield Locos Salvatruchas” (PLS) – a subset, or “clique” – of La Mara Salvatrucha in the 1990s and served as its leader until his arrest in 2009 for attempted murder. Also known as MS-13, La Mara Salvatrucha is composed largely of Salvadorans and Salvadoran immigrants.

Two other former leaders of the local PLS clique, Mario Oliva, a/k/a “Zorro,” and Roberto Contreras, a/k/a “Demonio,” are also charged in a 26-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury.

In all, the indictment charges 14 alleged members of the gang with racketeering conspiracy and a host of other violent crimes.

Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

We typically don’t thank our body parts because they seldom leave us.  Most of us have not experienced unfortunate accidents or suffered the horrible consequences of war; tragic events  which might cause us to lose a limb.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...

This all-encompassing theory would tie together general relativity (large scale and high mass galaxies, stars, etc), quantum theory (quantum mechanics, quarks, atoms, subatomic particles), and Newtonian physics (gravity on small bodies, gas laws, electromagnetism) to ...

‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales' Captures Old-Fashioned Nostalgia at Shakespeare Theatre

MADISON, NJ – It’s clear the Welsh love to sing as the evening moves on with relatives gathering for Christmas dinner at the Thomas home in Wales.

The play opens with three children and then a chorus singing “In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,” a melancholy tune that conjures visions of Swansea, a village in Wales,  with “fallen snow on ...
