LIVINGSTON, NJ - Woodmont Properties, one of New Jersey’s developers of luxury residential communities, named Executive Vice President, General Counsel Member and former Mayor Stephen A. Santola as a finalist in NJBIZ’s General Counsel of the Year Award program for 2014. The award recognizes legal professionals, like Santola, who play crucial roles in the company’s success.
Santola currently manages the company's legal affairs and entitlements, and plays a significant role in managing the development division, guiding new business opportunities and directing corporate strategy. With more than 10 years of service as General Counsel at Woodmont Properties, Santola was ultimately nominated in the category of “Private Companies with revenues under $1 billion,” alongside eight of his colleague.
“Any time you get a nomination in a professional capacity it’s nice because it means your peers think enough of you to honor you for what you do,” Santola said. “Everyone at Woodmont Properties understands what we’ve accomplished as well as the kind of work we each put in so it means a lot when your peers recognize that you’re doing a good job.”
Based in Fairfield, N.J., Woodmont Properties has contributed to the region’s residential and commercial marketplace by developing residential communities, office buildings, retail centers and industrial properties in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for more than 50 years. It is a full service real estate company, which owns, develops and manages both residential communities and commercial properties.
During a breakfast ceremony in June, the finalists nominated in five categories were announced in front of an audience of 400 people. According to Santola, each of the finalists was proud to be nominated because it meant being recognized for their recent accomplishments. Ultimately, a nomination meant the candidate put the overall company in a better position.
Santola also said it was a nice honor for him, like any nomination is, but also an honor for the company as a whole. He said the key to success at Woodmont Properties is each department’s relationship with the others in the company. Since his debut at the company in 2004, Santola has noticed that each individual department at Woodmont Properties is only as strong as its counterparts.
“I was originally a real estate attorney and Westmont Properties was one of my clients,” Santola said. “So when they needed a General Counsel it was a perfect fit.”
