Four Run Rally in Seventh Lifts New Providence Baseball over Governor Livingston

April 27, 2013 at 11:50 PM

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Failing to get much of anything going all game, the New Providence baseball team put four runs across in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Governor Livingston, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Union County Tournament.

“It’s a great win for the kids,” New Providence head coach Chris Brodeur said. The fact they can come back against a quality opponent.”

The Pioneers were trailing 3-2 entering the final inning and had not seen multiple batters reach base since the third inning.  However, Alan Payne reached on a fielding error and that started a stretch of six of the next seven batters getting on.

Mike Felezzola delivered the big hit knocking in two runs with a line drive to centerfield which was followed by Jordan Morang scoring Felezzola with a double to right field. By the time the inning was over, 10 New Providence batters came to the plate with four runs and four hits on the board.

“I don’t think we played particularly well,” Governor Livingston head coach Chris Roof said. “To me it seemed like New Providence wanted it more.”

The offensive explosion gave Pioneers starter David Gelormini the win. Gelormini shut down the Highlanders in the seventh to secure his second win over Governor Livingston in the past week. Gelormini finished with the complete game, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out six.

“Phenomenal,” Brodeur said of Gelormini’s pitching. “He did a great job, were looking for someone to throw strikes so they can put the ball in play.”

For Governor Livingston the story of the game was missed opportunities. After responding in the second inning with three runs to take the 3-2 lead, the Highlanders continued to leave guys on base, leaving a total of nine on, six of which were in scoring position.

“It just wasn’t meant to be,” Roof said. “If we make the score 5, 6 to 2, it’s a different game. We knew throughout the game we needed to tack on some runs but just couldn’t.”

New Providence returns to the field on Tuesday to face Union Catholic while Governor Livingston plays Roselle Catholic on Thursday.
