NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Rutgers University has announced that four athletes and one staff member have tested positive for COVID-19.

The athletes are members of the men’s lacrosse, gymnastics and wrestling programs.

Those student-athletes and the staff member have been quarantined and the university, in conjunction with public health officials, is conducting contact tracing to identify any individuals with whom the student-athletes have been in contact with, according to a school spokesperson.

The Rutgers football team was hit hard by COVID-19 earlier this summer when 30 players tested positive, forcing the team to halt workouts in July.

Coach Greg Schiano said about half of the football players who tested positive were asymptomatic.

The Big Ten Conference announced it was postponing all regular-season contests and Big Ten championships and tournaments due to ongoing health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
