MADISON, NJ - More than 100 students -- from Summit, Madison, Long Hill, New Providence and other neighboring communities, are already set to attend the Fourth Annual Alliance Latino Youth Leadership conference, which will be held February 23, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison.
The event's keynote speaker will be Jessica Formoso, a FOX 5 news team as a reporter since August of 2015. Prior to FOX 5, she was a general assignment bilingual reporter for News 12 networks, including News 12 En Español.
Formoso has covered Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy, and the Ebola outbreak in New York. She has also reported on the surge of unaccompanied children crossing the border and migrating to our area. In May of 2013, she received the Garden State Journalists' "Best TV-General News" award for her story, "Mexican Red Cross Helps Sandy Victims.”
The conference is open to all high school students of Latino heritage and is an opportunity to get the inside track on the realities of college and encourage realization of their aspirations. Students attending the conference will be empowered to follow their dreams, hear from others who have been successful overcoming big life hurdles, meet other Latino students and share success stories, learn about financing college and getting scholarships and begin writing their own success stories.
The Alliance for Latino Leadership is a local grassroots organization with the goal to encourage and empower Latino students to create and realize their dreams. This year’s conference will have students interacting with college students and professors, learning about their rights as students and participating in a college tour of the Fairleigh Dickinson campus, among other activities.
“Write your next chapter! Descubre tu poder’’ the theme of this year’s conference will be explored through activities involving set objectives and teamwork. Students will create an action plan to make their ‘story’ a reality.
A previous Alliance conference student attendee commented, “I was blessed to attend the first Alliance for Latino Leadership conference…. As a senior in May when everyone had their college plans already figured out, I felt like I was the only one with no planned future. It was inspiring for me to see a room full of ambitions and young Latino students like me united. I met a group of wonderful people who were determined to help us to discover our potential. Attending the conference gave me the confidence that I hadn't discovered as a Latino student."
The conference will be held in English and Spanish -La conferencia será bilingüe.
