ROXBURY, NJ - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is extending through the end of December the program that allows meal program operators to serve free meals to all school children, including those in Roxbury.

“This unprecedented move will help ensure – no matter what the situation is on-the-ground – children have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, said the USDA. "The USDA has been and continues to be committed to using the Congressionally appropriated funding that has been made available."

The extension can be a huge relief for some in the Roxbury community. For those families who might not qualify for free and reduced meals, but are still going through difficult times and worry about how to keep food on the table, this provides one less thing to worry about as the district begins a new school year with a variety of hybrid and all-virtual schedules.

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

As Title I schools, Franklin and Nixon Elementary Schools will continue to offer breakfast whether you are virtual or hybrid in-person. For all virtual students at these two schools, breakfast and lunch will be delivered daily to the home.

For in-person learners, when the district is closed on Monday due to a holiday such as Sept. 7, Sept. 28 and Oct. 12, breakfast will be served in the classroom on Tuesday. Breakfast for the rest of the week (Wednesday-Friday) will be delivered on Tuesdays to the home.

All virtual students in the seven Roxbury schools will have lunch meals delivered daily. Mondays are virtual for all students district-wide. Therefore, hybrid students will also have lunches delivered on that day when school is in session.

For the remainder of the week, depending on your in-person Blue (Tuesday and Thursday) or Gold (Wednesday and Friday) cohort, students will be provided Grab & Go lunches for that day and the next as they are dismissed.

Families do not have to apply for these free meals through December 2020. However, meal request forms will need to be completed daily. These links will be available on the individual school websites under the Quick Links section on the left.  Scroll down for the “Student Pre-Order Meal Form”
