NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -- Incoming Freshman are invited to a kickoff event for the new school year at North Plainfield High School on August 29 from 9 a.m. until a little after noon. The event, held in the high school gymnasium on Wilson Avenue, is a week before students arrive for the first day of school.
"This event is designed to reduce your stress, meet your mentor, and renew friendships prior to the start of school," wrote principal Jerard Stephenson in a letter to all Freshmen.
The High School has trained junior and senior students in small group instruction, and they will serve as mentors. Each incoming student will receive a mentor who will meet with them one a month at a scheduled extended home room, and at least three times during each month. The idea is to help freshman adjust to the academic rigors and social issues of high school, and to help them succeed academically.
Last year the school started issuing iPads to all incoming students, and will continue the program this year by distributing them at the orientation. Parents of students wishing to receive an iPad must have participated in an iPad orientation, and one orientation is available at the 9 a.m. orientation.
At the orientation kickoff students will meet some of their teachers, get home room assignments, and receive a "Class of 2018 Canuck" t-shirt that not only shows their class but also gets them free admission to the first home football game of the year.
Representations from clubs and other extra-curricular activities will be on hand for both students and parents to find interesting additions to their scheduled classwork.
Programs will end around noon, and a lunch will be served.
