Organists Eric Stroud, and Anne Matlack will once again offer lunchtime organ meditations throughout Lent, beginning March 7, and running through April 11. The recitals begin at 12:15 following brief (5 minute) noonday prayer, and end at 12:45. Drinks and dessert are provided after each performance. Local gourmet sandwich shop, Madison’s On A Roll, will provide a selection of wraps and sandwiches for $6 purchase after each concert. The concerts are free and open to the public. The organ console and pedals will be projected onto the wall for better audience viewing.
On March 7, Dr. Anne Matlack will open the series with “Angels in America” featuring works by Gwyneth Walker and Craig Phillips. George Moser, guest organist will perform on March 14. Assistant organist Eric Stroud presents “Baroque Banquet.” On J.S. Bach’s birthday, March 21, the Helen E.J.Thomas Memorial Concert will feature fine area vocalist Patricia Ruggles, Anne Matlack, organ, and oboe in Bach’s Cantata 82, Ich habe genug (“It is Enough”). Helen E. J. Thomas (1917-2006) was Grace Church’s organist for 50 years, designed the Cutler Memorial Organ, and began the Lenten recital series.
Eric Stroud will present and All-Baroque program on March 28 and a program of 20th century French composer, Langlais, on April 4. Stroud and Matlack with join each other and area vocalists and instrumentalists to conclude the programs April 11.
The Adult and teen choirs of Grace will also open Lent with a candlelight Evensong service Sunday March 9 at 4 p.m., featuring works by Stanford, Chesnokov and Smith, and followed by a wine and cheese reception.
Eric Stroud, assistant organist, is in his 12th year at Grace Church, and a talented improviser as well as recitalist, currently studying with Brian Harlow. As well as her celebrating her 23rd year as music director at Grace Church, Dr. Matlack is Artistic Director of the acclaimed Harmonium Choral Society. She studied organ with Charles Krigbaum at Yale and David Mulbury at The Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
