Future Chef Competition at Helen Morgan

SPARTA, NJ- Helen Morgan Elementary School was the site of the Future Chef Competition on Tuesday, March 18.  Students from the fourth and fifth grades submitted healthy sandwich recipes to Lisa Fiorentine of Sodexo, earlier this winter.  Eight finalists were chosen to compete by preparing their sandwiches for a panel of  judges. 

The eight finalists were Ethan Acquadro, Elizabeth DeGasperis, Noor Elhamouly, Mike Fowler,  Taylor Kelly, McCall Manning, Suvaani Ranasinghe, Isabella Verdesco. 

Craig Merrill, Sparta High School history teacher and recent  leader of the  winning team of the Culinary Throwdown,  Kelly McEvoy, board of education vice president and Kim Walsh, lead cook at Sparta High School served as judges tasked with the challenge of ranking the sandwiches.

Student creations were judged on originality, healthy attributes, ease of preparation, appeal to children and presentation.

Manning's Chicken Crisp sandwich earned first prize.  The ingredients are deli chicken slices, thin slices of green apple, fresh mozzarella on honey whole wheat bread with low fat mayonnaise on the side.

SPARTA, NJ – A man from Bronx, NY was taken into custody for trying to fill a fraudulent prescription at Sparta CVS on January 16 around 12:51 p.m.

SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta man was charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed into a light pole.  On January 9 around 11 p.m. Sparta police Cpl. Kurt Morris responded to the report of a naccident on West Shore Trail near White Deer Plaza according to police.

SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta man faces numerous charges including driving while intoxicated after speeding past a police car on Woodport Road.  Jake Forshey drove past police officer Tom Snyder on January 8 around 2:50 a.m, according to police.
