G.I.F.T. Program at Farmers Market Returns Starting May 11

SUMMIT, NJ - Summit Downtown, Inc. is bringing back its contribution initiative, Give It Fresh Today (G.I.F.T.) to the Summit Farmers Market for the 2014 season.  The first Farmers Market of the season will be held May 11, from 8 a.m - 1 p.m., at DeForest Avenue and Maple Street.

Last year, through the generosity of the community, Summit Downtown, Inc. and its partners were able to distribute over 5,000 pounds of healthy, locally grown food to people who may otherwise not have access to it.

When shoppers at the market buy fresh produce, they are presented with the opportunity to buy extra for people in need.  Participating farmers can also donate leftover or surplus produce at the end of the market day.  Each week the produce collected is given to Summit Helps Its People (SHIP), a nonprofit that feeds and provides support services to the homeless and at-risk homeless people in Summit, and St. Ann’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, which serves approximately 80,000 meals per year.

“So many people have benefited from this wonderful program,” explained Summit Downtown, Inc. Executive Director Marin Mixon.  “We are excited to bring the hugely successful initiative back again this season.”

For further information on the G.I.F.T. program, or the Summit Farmers Market, visit, or contact Summit Downtown, Inc. at 908- / 277-6100.  The Farmers Market continues each Sunday through November 23.
