Geno Smith Football Camp Comes to Scotch Plains

June 14, 2014 at 11:17 PM

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith taught football skills, posed for pictures, and signed autographs for 300 local boys and girls in grades 1-8 at his Football ProCamp at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School on Saturday, June 14.  The second year QB, along with 30 of the area's top coaches, led campers in football drills at the high school during a three-hour session.

"Geno threw me a pass, and I caught it," said Jack Burke, 10, of Fanwood.  "We did running, throwing and passing drills. It was a lot of fun."

Smith, who interacted with each of the young football players, said he developed the camp to give back to the community.

“Today, it’s about the kids in Scotch Plains. We want to make sure that they have fun,” said Smith, who threw for over 3,000 yards and had 12 touchdowns passes for the Jets during his rookie season last year. “My best piece of advice is to always try to give your best and to do that every single time.”

Smith, who is expected to battle Michael Vick for the Jets starting quarterback job, said that he is developing better relationships with his receivers this year.  It is something that he hopes will help make the offense much better.

"I was just so engulfed in trying to learn the playbook and get my stuff done and doing all the little things that it was kind of hard to develop that exact chemistry that we want," Smith explained.

The event included a donation bin for HopeLine, an initiative by Verizon to collect used cell phones and accessories that will be refurbished to aid victims of domestic violence. The HopeLine project has donated 180,000 phones and $21 million in cash grants to domestic abuse victims and survivors.
