SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Madison Johnson pumped in 23 points and Union Catholic opened a huge early lead when the Vikings rolled to a 54-11 victory over Union on Thursday afternoon.

The Vikings, who improved to a very impressive 8-2 on the season under veteran coach Kathy Matthews, left little doubt about the outcome of this game by taking a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. UC led 29-3 at halftime and stayed in control the rest of the way.

Johnson, a junior who has elevated her game to another level this season, added four steals and three assists to her game-high 23 points. Senior Abbey Ortiz also had a strong all-round game for the Vikings with 12 points (two three-pointers), six assists, and two assists.

The Vikings will be back in action on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Scotch Plains-Fanwood. UC defeated Scotch Plains earlier this month, 46-27.
