SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. -- The Union Catholic girls basketball team showed a lot of heart when it came from way behind before falling to Plainfield, 51-46, on Senior Day on Monday.
Before the game, the Vikings honored senior guard Jamie Bonaccorso and senior forward E'Lana Kovacs for their contributions and commitment to the program.
Plainfield got off to a fast start, taking a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and opening up a 13 point lead early in the second quarter.
But the Vikings, now 9-10 on the season, put up a valiant comeback effort in the second half and took a 45-44 lead on Plainfield when junior guard Abbey Ortiz sank a three-pointer from the corner with just two minutes left in the game. But Plainfield closed out the game on a 6-1 run to secure the victory.
Sophomore Madison Johnson had a huge game for the Vikings with 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Freshman Kayla Riley scored 11 points for UC, Kovacs scored seven points, and Erin McNulty scored six points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Union Catholic will be back in action this Thursday at Immaculata.
