Girls on the Run 5K and 8.2 Lake Mohawk Challenge Drew Over 700 Runners

SPARTA, NJ--The sun was shining, but the smiles were even brighter on the faces of those who participated in the Girls on the Run New Jersey North 5K on Saturday, May 17.   

This is the third year for the race.  An event record of nearly 700 runners and walkers came out and enjoyed either the 5k route or the 8.2 mile Lake Mohawk Challenge loop.  Sparta Mayor Molly Whilesmith sounded the horn to start the race.  For the girls who participated in the Girls on the Run program, this race is the culmination of 10 weeks of preparing both physically and mentally for the event.   

Melisssa Fagersten is the director of the program.  Fagersten expressed her appreciation for the township, the Lake Mohawk residents and everyone who works together to make the race a success.

She added, “This race is not only the culminating event for the girls in the program, but a celebration of the camaraderie of the sport.  We are honored to host runners striving to achieve their personal best as well as runners completing their first 5K.  It truly is a race for everyone.”

Team Eastern Propane took the top spot as a team.  In the 5K, first place overall went to Brandon Meyer of Hackettstown, NJ with a time of 17.29 and the first place female was Debbie Seo of Branchville, NJ with a time of 21.47.   The following participants received medal for first place male and female finisher in their age group:
