MORRIS PLAINS, NJ - The Bernards girls soccer team rose up from the ninth seed to win the Section 2, Group 2 championship by winning a shootout with second-seeded Bergen Tech in the rain on Friday.

The Mountaineers engaged Bergen Tech in a 0-0 tie through regulation and two 10-minute overtimes before the game went to penalty kicks to determine who would advance. Bernards won the shootout, 4-3, with Makenna Davis scoring the decisive PK to enable the Mountaineers to advance.

Bernards (14-5-2) got eight saves in goal from Susan Oberschmidt en route to its 11th shutout of the season, including its last two state tournament games.

The Mountaineers are now just one game away from the state championship game. They need to get past Ramsey in the state Group 2 semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at neutral site Ridge High School.
