GLEN ROCK, NJ - The borough's Trex recycled plastic community bench, earned through residents saving up plastic bags, has been installed in Veterans Park.

Veterans Park is near the Main Line Train Station, along with the 911 Glen Rock Memorial.

"Around March last year (2018), the Glen Rock Environmental Commission (GREC) began what was known as the ‘Trex Challenge’―a collective effort lasting six months to gather a specific amount of plastic with the prize being a free bench made entirely out of recycled plastic geared for public use," Matthew Cheung, Glen Rock Green Team Intern, said.

Cheung said the challenge was initiated to reduce plastic waste and create awareness concerning the widespread use of plastic bags.

“Glen Rockers enthusiastically participated in the Trex challenge and it's very satisfying to see their efforts rewarded with the beautiful new bench in Veterans Park," Dr. Candace Lynch said.

In 3 months, Cheung said the Green Team collected 900 pounds of plastic film for proper recycling and highlighted the negative impact of plastic pollution on the environment.

"We also learned that plastic bags are a significant problem for our municipal recycling stream, entangling in gears and leading to multiple stoppages every day at the processing facility," Cheung said.

"With the challenge finished and the bench in position, the aftermath of the newly created concern regarding the production of plastics is sure to positively impact the town and hopefully reduce our plastics ‘generation’," Cheung said. "Trex, which is the company responsible for the challenge, is the world’s #1 eco-friendly decking company!"

Cheung said Trex used 95% of the recycled plastics from the winning organization to make an environmentally friendly bench. The finished material is better than wood because of lower maintenance, and the fact that it's insect-proof and rot-resistant.
