SPARTA, NJ-The girls varsity team once again won the Liberty League race on Jan. 23, with a team time of 6:10.35. Each of the Spartan girls that raced on Thursday night came in the top ten. Alia Flanigan took tenth and Lauren Scott took ninth. Each had their best finishes of the year. Juliana Kaminski led the girls taking fifth place finish with a combined time of 1:28.42.
The Spartan boys JV team dominated, taking the top four times in their races. Ryan Bloomgren finished first, Doug Triolo second, Nicholas Tartaglia third, and Justin Allan fourth. Jared Kish had an exceptional first run with a time of 56.43. If it were not for some course interference on his second run he would have been in the top five for the race.
Coach Kyle Markovich was happy with their performance, saying, "The depth of our boys JV team impresses me and I expect to even more improvement from them as the year goes on."
The boys varsity team had a great race and finished second after their two runs. Brad Maierle finished first on the team and fifth overall. David Gensheimer had his best finish of the year with a combined time of 1:39.33. Gensheimer finished 22nd overall, an impressive finish given the level of competition in that field of racers.
On Friday, Jan 25 the girls and boys varsity teams raced in the Giant Slalom festival race. In this race skiers compete against any team that enters from the entire state. It is a good way to compare the team against the other leagues. Once again Coach Markovich was pleased, "I was extremely impressed with both of our teams finishes, it shows how much our hard work and dedication had paid off."
The boys placed fifth. Ryan Dumbroff finished first on the team. The boys team time was 4:32.66, only three seconds behind fourth place West Milford. Jack McGover raced in his first varsity race and finished with a strong time of 1:25.33.
The girls finished second overall. Juliana Kaminski finished first for the Spartan team, with her sister Shannon Kaminski less than a second behind her. Rachel Stote was able to race in her first Spartan varsity race last night after waiting out the required three-race transfer waiting period. She had an impressive race with a top 20 finish and a combined time of 1:11.80.
The next races for Sparta High School ski team are Wednesday, Jan 29 starting at 3 p.m.at Mountain Creek. There will be a Dual Slalom race at Mt Peter on Sunday, Feb 2 at 11 a.m.
