Goose Causes Accident on Route 46

FAIRFIELD, NJ - As provided by Chief Anthony Manna, on August 25, 2014, at approximately 7:59 AM, the Fairfield Police Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a two car motor vehicle crash on Route 46 West near the Two Bridges Road Overpass.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Mazda, being operated by Jessica Wood (40) of Hawthorne, N.J., was traveling west on Route 46 in the left lane. Wood allegedly observed a Canadian goose in the roadway and applied her brakes in order to avoid striking it. At this point, a 1999 Suzuki, being operated by Bruce Figueroa (42) of Passaic, N.J., allegedly swerved to avoid striking the Mazda but couldn’t.

Wood had to be extricated from the Mazda with the assistance of the Fairfield Fire Department, the West Essex First Aid Squad and Atlantic Healthcare Ambulance. Both she and Figueroa were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, N.J. with unspecified injuries.

Figueroa was charged with careless driving. Traffic on Route 46 West was affected for a period of approximately 90 minutes while the scene remained active.
