Gov. Chris Christie signed an executive order today suspending the Council on Affordable Housing for 90 days while a special task force of experts determines whether it should continue to operate.

In the five-page order, the governor said the procedures established by COAH have proven to be "excessively complex and unworkable." Christie said "new thinking on statewide planning is necessary due to the failure of COAH to ensure that all constitutional obligations with respect to the provisions of affordable housing are satisfied in a manner that is both fair and reasonable to the already burdened municipalities of our state."

Christie said he will appoint a five-member task force to review COAH. The task force will serve without compensation and it will be comprised of experts in affordable housing, economic development, land use planning and environmental protection. The task force will have 90 days to complete its review.
