BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston's boys basketball team exacted some revenge as the Highlanders defeated Cranford on Saturday at Gov. Livingston's Senior Day Celebration game, 61-49. In their last meeting, Cranford edged Gov. Livingston in an overtime victory.

The game opened with a celebration honoring the GL seniors Steve Duda, Victor Candeloro, Pat Mahoney and Nick DiSarno along with team mangers, Ryan McElroy, Julianne Kingsley and Megan Laguardia.  The senior players Duda, Candeloro, Mahoney and DiSarno  have played basketball together since fourth grade,

"Very exciting game and fun game to watch against rival Cranford team avenging an early season overtime loss," said head coach Stephen Petruzzelli.

"All the seniors on the team have been great leaders this year.  They all work really hard and push us to be our best,” said junior Rob Imbalzano who led GL with 17 points.

It was the heart and grit of senior captains Mahoney with 14 points and Candeloro's strong game scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds that helped propel GL. Adding to the game's excitement was DiSarno's crowd-pleasing 3-pointer in the third quarter.

Mahoney made six foul shots down the stretch, allowing GL to maintain the lead.

"For the past 10 years, basketball has been an experience that I would not change for the world. It was a special day and one I will never forget. Playing and being honored with the friends I have known for the last 10 years was awesome.  I cannot thank all the coaches enough for their dedication over these past four years. Governor Livingston basketball has taught me so much and will be an experience that will be with me for the rest of my life, " said Mahoney

"Senior Day was easily one of the highlights of my season.  As a team we played one of our best all around games of the year and we beat Cranford which just made the win that much more satisfying.  Coming into the game, the focus was on making sure the four seniors on the team got to play significant minutes but we also obviously wanted to win and it was great that we were able to do both," said Candeloro.

"I could tell my younger teammates really wanted to get it done for us four seniors on the team, which Pat, Nick, Steve and I really appreciated. I finally got past my individual struggles and was able to contribute in a number of ways to the victory but I would've never been able to do this without the constant support of my coaches and teammates.  When I look back on my senior year of basketball, this day will definitely be one of my fondest memories," said Candeloro.
