CHATHAM, NJ – Despite allowing a goal in the opening minute, the Gov. Livingston girls’ soccer team defeated Chatham, 2-1, on Wednesday at Haas Field.

Cougar forward Emily Walczyk scored 26 seconds into the game on a failed clear attempt from the Highlander defensive line. However, that was the only strike against Gov. Livingston goalie Olivia Emanuel, as her backline held strong the rest of the game.

“It didn’t seem that we were ready to play at all, by any stretch of the imagination, by that goal inside a first minute,” Gov. Livingston head coach Mike Roof said. “I think one of our trademarks is that we have the ability to recover well.”

The Highlanders recovered quickly. Slighly over 10 minutes later, defender Alice Caballero scored the equalizer off a corner kick, on a play where Chatham goalkeeper Morgan Maltby actually stopped the ball, but right after it crossed the goal line.

After playing through a scoreless drought of almost 55 minutes, Gov. Livingston forward Melissa Quinn gave the Highlanders the lead when she slid a shot through Maltby’s right side to score the eventual winning goal.

Chatham pressured the Highlanders in the final 10 minutes, but failed to score on the Highlander back line, led by goal keeper Olivia Emanuel.

Cougar head coach Chris Mazurkiewicz hoped his team would rally behind their early goal, but said he is still happy with his team’s progress going forward.

“I’m confident with my team. I’ve got a talented group of kids, seniors through sophomores. I think if we play well and are on our game, we can run with anybody. We just have to be confident and do the little things.

The win pushes the Highlanders to 5-0 on the year, while Chatham drops to 2-2.

After playing on back-to-back days, the Highlanders will host Westfield at Snyder Ave. Field on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Chatham gets a visit from Randolph on Friday night at Cougar Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
