UNION, NJ - Gov. Livingston freshman Robert Monroy nets a hat trick in Gov. Livingston's 5-0 shut out win against Newark East Side at Union Sports Arena. This 'Super Sunday' match-up wrapped up a celebrated series of weekend sporting events for Gov. Livingston.
The Highlanders' domination in the first period saw many missed scoring opportunities. The Red Raiders were able to kill GL's power play advantage behind the strong defense of captain Thiago Araki and big saves by goalie Austin Verissimo to end the period 0-0.
GL sharpened their offense in the second period with freshman Danny Kramer leading the way. The momentum shifted when senior Kevin Ewald connected with Ryan Bonk from paint to slot with a backhanded shot followed by a slap shot by Kramer, both blocked by Verissimo.
The Highlanders captialized on a 5 on 3 advantage when Kramer sped coast to coast plowing through Newark's goalie Verissimo, knocking the net out of place. Kramer's goal was recorded with 4:11 left in the period. GL on the offensive, Monroy rebounds a deflected shot by Thomas Sousa for GL's second power play score of the night.
The game took a physical turn when a penalty on Newark's Araki was called for a hit to Tang resulting in more time in the box. GL responded with a third consecutive power play goal by Monroy from a faceoff rebound in front of the net.
The energy level was heated as Red Raiders Coach Keith Veltre and the crowd react to Newark's rapid 3 point deficit. Bonk ends the period fueling the fire with a breakaway goal increasing GL's lead.
With the win in sight, GL stayed strong defensively in the third. Possession shifted back and forth as GL's short bench showed signs of fatigue.
With 13 seconds remaining on the clock, tripping was called as Newark attempts to stop Monroy's breakaway. Monroy gets past Verissimo with game ending penalty shot.
"With 10 skaters on the bench, it is always a struggle to compete, no matter who we are playing. East Side deserved a ton of respect for how their hockey program had grown. This one was earned, just as every victory should be," said GL Coach Matt Anderson.
On both sides of the win this weekend, GL lost to Summit, 7-0, in Saturday night's match-up. Monroy reflected on Sunday night's victory: "We had a strong team with us tonight."
GL goalie Matt Altomare recorded 13 saves in this 5-0 shut out. Newark East Side goalie Austin Verissimo recorded 24 saves.
GL faces Jonathan Dayton on Friday, Jan. 17 at 9:15 p.m. at the Union Sports Arena.
