Gov. Livingston Wrestling Gets The Win Against Summit On Fantastic Friday

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The new Highlander mascot set the energy level as the crowd of students and fans cheered on the 7-2 GL Varsity Wrestling team in this Fantastic Friday match-up against Summit.  GL showed their valor continuing their winning streak with a 39-28 victory.  

 GL started strong recording 4 wins including a forfeit in 195 weight class.  Junior Spencer Marke (220) opened with a win against Summit's Harold Esquivel in an 8-4 decision, Sean Tomilson (285) followed with a pin late in match-up with Summit's Danny Petrella and GL Nick Mele (106) won a close bout with Summit's Corey Golden.

GL wrestled up in weight classes for the next 8 bouts winning 4 including 3 pins by Chris Sergio (120), Turner Haddad (138) and Ryan Hoy (145) and a 5-4 decision for Mike Rhodes (152).

"It was a good team win.  Some kids were filling in and they did a great job filling in staying off their backs,"  said GL junior Chris Sergio. 

Undefeated Hoy and Junior Heavyweight Tomilson have been recognized as two of  the top wrestlers in the state in their respective weight classes.

Summit's wins were fueled by young talent including freshmen Philip Angelo (113) pin of GL Jake Peccorelli   and Michael Acitelli (126) defeating GL Senior Joe Colder in an 11-4 major decision.  Senior Nicholas Testa pulled out a win in sudden death overtime against GL Austin Senkarik.  

Summit edged in on GL's lead with two pins  by Colum Dougherty (170) and Wiliiam Howard(182) and a 9-4 decision for Tanner Thomas (160) in the final bouts of the match. 

"Summit is a good team and they are up and coming and young.  This was a good win, the kids wrestled tough, they are improving every time and that's all I can ask for," said GL Coach Rich Ortega. 

The Highlanders face Linden at home, Monday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.

The Hilltoppers face Elizabeth on Jan. 22 at 5 p.m.
