Belmar Elementary School Tentatively Sets Eighth-Grade Graduation for August 23

TRENTON, NJ — Outdoor graduation ceremonies that comply with social distancing will be permitted beginning July 6, according to Gov. Phil Murphy.

“Class of 2020, I am proud to say you will have the opportunity to join with your classmates and family to celebrate your graduation,” said Murphy during his May 26 press briefing.

The Department of Education and Office of the Secretary of Higher Education are expected to release “guidance” on May 27 that will include social distancing and other criteria that will be required at all New Jersey schools to “ensure the health and safety of everyone in attendance,” he said.

The governor’s announcement comes four days after Belmar Elementary School released preliminary plans to hold eighth-grade graduation on Sunday, August 23 at a place to be determined — and as long as the event complies with federal and state regulations and guidelines at the time.

Also as part of its latest “Health-Related School Closure Home Instruction Plan,” the following events have also been tentatively scheduled:

  • August 18: Eighth-grade dinner-dance.
  • August 19: Breakfast, slideshow and yearbook signing.
  • August 20 and 21: Eighth-grade trip to Hershey Park/Gettysburg, Pa.
