BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - If there’s one thing that always brings people together it is sports. Whether tailgating or surrounding a television for a big game, people love to watch athletes run, jump, score and compete. On Friday, Jan.11 and Saturday, Jan.12, the Governor Livingston High School Highlander Booster Club will be holding their annual Fantastic Friday/Super Saturday Event.
According to its website, “the Highlander Booster Club is a volunteer organization of parents and other community members whose common goal is to enhance the athletic experience for all Highlander athletes and athletic teams.”
The Highlander Booster Club, an IRS-approved 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is funded by member dues, donations, GL merchandise sales and various other fundraisers. Last year the Booster Club raised over $70,000 for program support; all of this money was channeled directly back to the athletes and athletic programs at Governor Livingston High School through grants, awards and sponsorships. Some money raised in the past has gone towards softball and baseball field improvements, gym safety wall pads, Highlander field banner, scoreboards and uniforms.
It is the largest fundraiser of the year and it raised $20,000 last year. Booster Club Communications Director Nancy Imbalzano said it’s not just for high school students - it’s an event for the whole community. It really brings people together, she said.
“I think that it’s for all ages and there are fun things to do and experience,” she said. “No matter what age you are, no matter what school you’re in, there’s something there for you.”
Imbalzano said many of the students look forward to the varsity boys’ basketball game Saturday against rival New Providence and Friday evening when the boys middle school basketball team plays Mountainside, who they eventually will be teammates with in high school. Also, last year's magic show was such a success it will be returning this year as well.
It kicks off Friday at 5 p.m., with a pizza dinner, the Highlander Wrestling match against Middlesex High School, Columbia Middle School Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball games vs. Deerfield Middle School and a magic show.
The event continues Saturday at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast followed by a full slate of athletic games at the high school. On Saturday morning, athletic events include PAL, GL Freshmen Girls’ and JV Boys’ basketball games and GL Varsity Girls’ Fencing vs. Bernards High School at 9 a.m. At 1:30 p.m. the GL Varsity Girls’ Basketball team will take on New Providence. At 4:30 p.m., the grand finale features rivals GL Varsity Boys’ Basketball team as they take on New Providence.
