Grand Jury Indicted Edison Police Officer on Charges of Attempted Murder and Arson

June 27, 2014 at 4:00 PM

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ -  On his first official day as the Middlesex County Prosecutor, Andrew C. Carey announced that a grand jury in Middlesex County indicted an Edison police officer on charges of attempted murder and setting fire to his police captain’s home in Monroe Township, and charged the officer’s wife with a count of giving false information to prevent her husband from being arrested and charged.

The indictment handed up in New Brunswick accused Officer Michael A. Dotro, 37, of Manalapan with 10 counts, including charges of aggravated arson and five counts of attempting to murder Captain Mark Anderko and four relatives who lived with the police captain at their home in Monroe Township.

Dotro also was charged with criminal mischief, unlawful possession of a destructive device used to set the fire, hindering his apprehension or prosecution by providing false information to investigators, and retaliation for past official action of the police captain.

In addition, his wife, Alycia Dotro, was charged with hindering by providing false information during the investigation of her husband.

Michael A. Dotro was arrested at his home in Manalapan and was charged three days after the fire was set at Captain Anderko’s home on May 20, 2013.

Dotro, who had been an Edison Police officer for nine years, was suspended from his job following his arrest.

The investigation began when Monroe Township police were alerted at 3:59 a.m. to the fire at the home on Arlene Drive.

Police, EMT workers and firefighters from Monroe Township Fire Stations 23-A, 23-B, 51 and 57 arrived. The fire was extinguished within 10 to 15 minutes.

Captain Anderko, his wife, two children and 92-year-old mother were home at the time of the fire, but were not injured.

The investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Monroe Township Police Department quickly determined that the fire had been intentionally set outside the home and had caused extensive damage to the two-story, colonial-style home.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, Michael A. Dotro and Alycia Dotro are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Falling by Jane Green

Falling by Jane Green (Berkley, 2016)

Every now and again I just love a mindless romance novel, and I've been a huge fan of Jane Green's since her first book, Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans. Despite being classified as “chick lit,” the character and plot of Jemima J. has stayed with me for sixteen years after first reading it because the story ...
