HALEDON, NJ - The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office announced that a 35-year-old Haledon man, Salvador Navarro, was indicted by a Passaic County Grand Jury for "sexual offenses against a child between the ages of thirteen and sixteen."  The offenses were said to have taken place between February 4, 2018, and November 9, 2019, in Haledon.

The indictments against Navarro included one count of first degree aggravated sexual assault, one count of second degree endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of third degree criminal sexual contact.

The Prosecutor's Office said that the charges carry several years of prison.  If convicted, Navarro could face 10-20 years in New Jersey State Prison for aggravated sexual assault, and 85% of the term would have to be served before he was eligible for parole.  Additionally, third degree aggravated criminal sexual contact has a potential sentence of 3-5 years, and endangering the welfare of a child a potential sentence of 5-10 years.

The state had made a motion for a pretrial detention, which a superior court judge denied.  With the disposition of the case pending, Navarro is on a pretrial release and scheduled to be arraigned on March 30, 2021, before the Honorable Justine A. Niccollai, JSC.

The Prosecutor's Office said that an indictment is only an accusation.  "Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt."
