WEST ORANGE, NJ - Gregory Elementary School held its Spelling Bee on Jan. 17, with 17 nervous third-, fourth- and fifth-graders standing in line to participate.
The competition had begun prior, with homeroom winners that had also completed a vocabulary test. After 18 rounds of spelling words, Ashton Kittur, a fifth-grader, was named the winner, with fifth-grader Jack Klausner and fourth-grader Beckett Yee the runners-up. Some of the spelling words in the Gregory competition were "talisman," "vitriolic" and "verdure."
Ashton will move on to the North Jersey Spelling Bee in March, which is being held at Bergen Community College. The winner of the North Jersey Spelling Bee will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Principal Michele Thompson said, "We wish Ashton luck and thank all our spellers who did an absolutely amazing job! We are proud of every single student!"
