UNION COUNTY, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders offers travel guidance to mourners who are visiting the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth, in order to pay their last respects to Sheriff Ralph Froehlich.
Sheriff Froehlich, the longest-serving sheriff in New Jersey history, passed away last Sunday night after a period of illness. In recognition of his record of accomplishments, the many lives he touched, and his lifelong passion to serve the people of Union County, his body will lie in state at the Union County Courthouse Rotunda from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27.
The County Courthouse and Rotunda
The County Courthouse is located at 2 Broad Street in midtown Elizabeth. It is part of the County Administration Complex bordered by Broad Street, Rahway Avenue, Elizabethtown Plaza, and Caldwell Place.
The Courthouse is notable for its historic tower and Rotunda. Mourners will enter the Rotunda from the main entrance at 2 Broad Street, which is characterized by a formal plaza and staircase. Persons with disabilities will be guided to the Rotunda via an ADA-compliant entrance at street level.
The following arrangements apply only to Sunday, July 27:
Nearby public parking is available at the City of Elizabeth’s J. Christian Bollwage Parking Garage. The garage is located on Elizabethtown Plaza, between West Jersey Street and Caldwell Place. There are entrances on Elizabethtown Plaza and Caldwell Place.
The Freeholder Board is also making County Lot 4 available for public parking. Lot 4 consists of two sections on opposite sides of Rahway Avenue (Route 27), where it meets Cherry Street. These lots are approximately three blocks from the main Courthouse entrance.
Additional overflow public parking is also being made available by Trinitas Regional Medical Center, at Lots A and B located within the Medical Center complex. The main entrance to the complex is located at Pearl Street and South Broadway. Lots A and B are approximately four blocks from the Courthouse.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Krowicki McCracken Funeral Home, 2124 St. Georges Avenue, in Linden. On Monday morning, July 28 there will be a formal procession from the funeral home to St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 155 Washington Street, Elizabeth, passing the County Courthouse. Drivers in the area should be alert for pedestrians and changing traffic patterns.
