MADISON, NJ - After 30 years of styling and cutting hair, Florham Park resident Louisa DeRose opened Hair We Are in Madison two years ago. Since its inception, the salon has become a hotspot in the community.
DeRose and co-owner Michelle Valentine worked at Hair Core on Waverly Place in Madison for 16 years and enjoyed the majority of their time, but when management changed, it was time for a change, DeRose said. Eventually, the two women decided to leave and open up their own business and six of their colleagues came with them.
“It’s been great,” she said.
DeRose said she and the other women were in a position where they all felt a change was needed. When they relocated, many of their clients followed them, but they didn’t know where the new salon was located. Therefore DeRose named her new salon, Hair We Are.
“In this business when you leave, you usually leave with a following,” she said.
DeRose said the goal was to have a full service salon, with a warm atmosphere and reasonable prices where men, women and children could come for haircuts. They are open seven days a week, give discounts to senior citizens and college students and provide snacks and coffee for customers while they wait.
All of the women get along and their clients trust them, DeRose said. Prior to opening, their goals were to be successful and happy and so far they have accomplished both, she said.
“All of our work is quality because we’ve been doing it for 30 years,” she said. “It’s a family salon.”
While business has been great, the only downside is in the two years of being open, they have had to deal with Hurricanes Sandy and Irene. They are members of the Madison Chamber of Commerce and are active members of the community, DeRose said.
Hair We Are was just named Merchant of the Month in Madison, a prestigious honor for local businesses in Madison.
Looking towards the future, she is s excited and plans to continue cutting and styling hair for as long as possible.
“Unless my hands fall off, I’m good,” she said.
