It was Hook & Ladder vs. Hose & Steam in 1889 Lansdale.
On Jan. 12 of that year, Lansdale Borough Council created "The Lansdale Hose and Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 1."
For months, citizens became impatient with the slow progress of council, and thus, on April 26, 1889, formed their own rival fire company, "Hook & Ladder Co. No. 2."
Hook & Ladder Co. No. 2 then became "Fairmount Hook & Ladder and Fire Engine Co. No. 1 of Lansdale."
According to Fairmount Fire Company history book, in June 1889, the Steever property was purchased at Courtland Street and Montgomery Avenue in Lansdale. It became the first home of Fairmount Fire Co. Today, Montgomery and Courtland don't even intersect; this is now the site of Century Plaza.
Around 1900, the fire company moved to its new home at Courtland Street and Susquehanna Avenue, now occupied by 21st Century Media's The Reporter Newspaper. It would be there until 1980, when it moved to its current home at Vine Street and Susquehanna Avenue.
Sometime around 1920, a conflict arose between the two fire companies, which led to Lansdale Borough Council stepping in and disbanding Lansdale Fire Co. It turned everything over to the new official borough fire company, Fairmount Fire Co.
A ladies auxiliary was created on Nov. 12, 1920. By 1926, the fire company had its own ambulance service. A year later, council would grant a one-half mill fire tax for operation of the fire company. Today, Fairmount Fire Co. has a 3 mill fire tax.
It has now been 125 years since the creation of the former Lansdale Hook & Ladder Co. No. 2.
Naturally it wants to celebrate, as reported by Fairmount Fire Co. President Ian Fickert:
The Fairmount Fire Company of Lansdale is proud to announce that this year marks the 125th anniversary of the fire company’s service to Lansdale Borough.
In 1889, the Fairmount Fire Company was organized to protect the citizens and properties of Lansdale Borough. Fairmount Fire Company continues to provide many services to the citizens and its many businesses in Lansdale.
