The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum in Short Hills has announced its spring program schedule. Starting in March, the Arboretum will host an array of nature-related, educational programs for children of all ages that promote the understanding of the relationship between people and the environment by integrating the arts, sciences and humanities. During these sessions, little explorers are introduced to the natural world at the Arboretum, giving them life-long appreciation for their surroundings.
For those with toddlers, the Arboretum’s Parent & Child discovery class is a one hour nature instruction. For preschool age children, drop off programs are available for Turtle Tot class (3 to 5 year olds), which runs one day a week. The children eat lunch with their Arboretum friends. Through a different theme each week, the class fosters children’s curiosity of nature with trail walks, crafts, games, stories and hands on activities.
This spring the Arboretum continues its popular after school programs series designed so students can have some time dedicated solely to topics related to the natural world. Children will engage in age appropriate activities that become more challenging as the program progresses. Participants explore and investigate the wonders of nature with others their own age. The after school clubs are available for students from kindergarten to eighth grade.
The Environmental Eagles program is a drop-in educational program offered on Saturday mornings, reaching out to youth from first to twelfth grades. Official Environmental Eagle t-shirts, badges and pins can be earned.
The Arboretum is also offering adult events this spring. Dr. Randi Eckel will present Incredible Edibles! Wild Foods for the Taking on March 18th at 10:00 AM. Our annual Meadowlands Canoe Trip is scheduled for May 18th.. A rain barrel workshop will be held on June 3rd.
The Arboretum is offering a family night hike on April 5th at 7:00 PM. Our annual Creatures of the Night program will be held on April 19th starting at 6:00 PM. On May 4th we are hosting our 3rd Annual Arbor Day Arb-E-Que from 11 AM to 2 PM. There will be food from Famous Dave’s Barbeque, a live animal presentation, face painting, scavenger hunt in the woodlands and a free tree give away to every child that attends. A family camp out at the Arboretum is scheduled for May 4th – 5th.
For those still looking for fun in the summer there is still space in Camp Cora for children from ages 3 to 11. We are also featuring an Adventure Trip Week for ages 11 – 15.
