BERKELEY HEIGHTS – Dr. Kathleen C. Serafino, Executive Union County Superintendent of Schools, has announced that she has chosen Helen Kirsch to serve as president of the Berkeley Heights Board of Education through the Board’s next organization meeting in January 2015.
The Berkeley Heights Board of Education held its 2014 Organization Meeting on Jan. 6, at which time the board deadlocked at three votes apiece for Helen Kirsch and Douglas Reinstein when choosing the board member who would serve as president this year. When the board is unable to decide who is to serve as its president, it is prescribed by state statute that the executive county superintendent make such a determination.
In a letter recently received by Donna Felezzola, Berkeley Heights School Business Administrator/Board Secretary, Serafino stated that she had learned that Board of Education member Mary Ann Walsh, who was unable to attend the Jan. 6 meeting, fully supported Kirsch for president. Knowing this, the executive county superintendent said that she would “go with the will of the Berkeley Heights Board of Education and appoint Helen Kirsch president.”
Mrs. Kirsch has been a member of the Berkeley Heights Board of Education since 1983 and she has served as President at various times during her time on the Board, most recently since January 2013.
