SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Holy Savior Academy held its annual May Crowning, a traditional Roman Catholic ritual honoring Mary as ‘the Queen of Heaven and Earth,’ on May 16.

“May is the Month of Mary, our Mother. Our May Crowning is a way for our students and staff to honor Mary, our Mother, and to pray to her for Jesus’ blessings on all of us,”Holy Savior Academy Principal Carol Woodburn told TAPinto South Plainfield.

For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of Mary to honor Mary, Mother of God; the custom also spans cultures, with roots going back as far as the Ancient Greeks. Throughout the world, May Crownings are held during the month of May, paying tribute to the Virgin Mary with prayer services, song, processions, praying the rosary and crowning Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.

“Crowning a statue of the Lord’s mother is symbolic of the honor we give to [the one] chosen by God to bare his son…” one Holy Savior second grader told the crowd of students, staff and parents gathered for this year’s ceremony.

This year’s May Crowning began in the school gymnasium with a prayer service and songs led by the second grade students, many who earlier this month received their First Holy Communion and wore their suits and dresses. A procession outside to the statue of Mary located in front of Sacred Heart Church followed. There, each second grader, with assistance from the school’s recently Confirmed eighth graders, placed a crown on the statue’s head and flowers at the statue’s feet.

"I was so very proud of all of our second graders and the beautiful tribute they paid to Mary, Queen of May," said Woodburn.
