Not trying to date myself but I am sure many remember a cartoon called the Jetsons :) Looking back I think George was well ahead of his time when it came to technology in his house. Well let's fast forward to 2013, and it is nothing short of amazing and the same time can be scary concerning how far we have come as well as where it’s going. There is a wireless protocol called Z-Wave which is a next-generation wireless ecosystem that lets all your home electronics talk to each other, and to you, via remote control. It uses simple, reliable, low-power radio waves that easily travel through walls, floors and cabinets. Z-Wave control can be added to almost any electronic device in your house, even devices that you wouldn't ordinarily think of as "intelligent," such as appliances, window shades, thermostats and home lighting.
On a security basis a number of manufacturers have locking hardware that is powered by batteries that can reside on your Z-wave mesh network. The first question I am sure is why, well imagine being able to unlock your door from work for an unexpected guest or relative passing through? You also have the ability to program one time entry for vendors, babysitter, dog walker etc. followed by the ability to change your entry combination whenever you feel the need. (all locking hardware still has a key override).
There is also plug in receptacles that can now control lighting fixtures. The lighting timers of yesterday would be programmed and while you were away the lights would go on at 8:00 and off at 12:00 every day. With Z-wave it is easy to change times and program from your smart phone or tablet. There is also the ability to have a motion activated webcam either inside or out that would alert you with a text or an email when motion is detected. They even have Z-wave thermostat’s that enable you control on a schedule or possibly you may want the heat turned up as you are headed home from work in the middle of the winter.
I think even George Jetson would be impressed with the App you can have on your cell phone to control all of the aforementioned and more. We work directly with Napco and have a custom application and an App for your phone. For more information just contact your security provider, Electrician or HVAC, I am sure the current and active contractors will have their own opportunities to discuss.
