How to Have a Stress-Free Thanksgiving Dinner

November 25, 2013 at 7:13 AM

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD – While Thanksgiving is a time for thanks, it can also be a time for stress. John’s Meat Market, Nick’s Pizza and Deli and Mara’s Café and Bakery all have Thanksgiving specials that can make preparing a Holiday meal easier.

John’s Meat Market, at 389 Park Ave. in Scotch Plains, has turkeys, geese, ducks and capons. They also offer homemade turkey gravy, stuffing, cranberry chutney, and stuffed mushrooms.

“We have sold over 2,000 turkeys. People are coming from all over to buy our turkey, which has 18 percent more breast meat. We are almost sold out. The largest bird we have sold was 35 pounds. We will be open until 6 p.m. on Tuesday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday,” said Vinnie Losavio, owner of John’s Meat Market.

Paul Watterson, who owns Nick’s Pizza and Deli at 42 S. Martine Ave. in Fanwood, will be baking banana pumpkin bread that “sells out every day we make it. This week, we are also making a special pizza called Gobbler Pie. It has mashed potatoes, turkey and gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce and biscuits. And--during the Thanksgiving week--we are offering 10 percent off our catering menu.” Watterson went said he wished to “thank the community for being such a great town. We appreciate everybody. The town is unbelievable.”

Mara’s Café and Bakery, at 250 South Ave. in Fanwood, will be open Thanksgiving Day from 6 to 11 a.m. Marci Semel, who owns Mara’s, suggested, “If you are traveling out of town to have your meal with friends or relatives, it’s a great idea to show up with some fresh roasted coffee and sugar cookies.” And if you are cooking at home, Mara’s has deserts, cakes, pies and breakfast breads. Pies for the holiday include apple, pecan and three-nut cranberry with either a flaky hand-rolled crust or buttery crumb crust.

“Also for the day after Thanksgiving we will offer quiches, and lots of special pairings and samplings,” Semel said.
