PEQUANNOCK, NJ - It took 10 innings, but Hasbrouck Heights is no longer in the ranks of the undefeated, falling to Pequannock, 2-1, in 10 innings Thursday afternoon in Pequannock. The Golden Panthers scored in the bottom of the tenth on a squeeze play, ending the game. The Lady Aviators are now 9-1 on the season.
Hasbrouck Heights took a 1-0 lead in the fifth off of Pequannock starting pitcher Brielle Toone, before the Golden Panthers rallied tying the game in the sixth inning and squeezing across the run in the 10th.
Pequannock won in the bottom of the tenth under international tie-breaker rules. Starting the inning with a runner on second and no outs, the Golden Panthers leadoff hitter bunted for a base-hit, putting runs on first and third with no outs. The Lady Panthers then tried one squeeze, with the runner taking off on the pitch.
Hasbrouck Heights pitcher Olivia Marinelli fielded the bunt and flipped it to her sister, Alexa, for the tag for the first out, with the runner moving up to third. Pequannock repeated the play, and after two fouls, was able to get the bunt down and the Lady Aviators were not able to get the out at home, ending the game.
Marinelli, who suffered her first loss of the year, allowed eight hits and two walks, while striking out 15 on the day.
