FAIR LAWN, NJ - In a dramatic, heartwrenching announcement, Deputy Mayor Gail Rottenstrich told the public at the borough council meeting last night that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

"I have gotten so much support," she said, voice cracking as she tried to keep herself together. "This loving town has been there with support I can count on."

Last month, when Rottenstrich was reminding people to get screened for cancer, she learned of her condition after she followed her own advice on seeking out screening.

Deputy Mayor of Community Affairs John Cosgrove, who sits next to Rottenstrich on the dais, grabbed her hand right after the announcement. While Cosgrove is at the end of his tenure on the council, Rottenstrich's term ends at the end of 2021. The two are serving on the Census Committee appointed by Mayor Kurt Peluso.
