WEST ORANGE, NJ — The Verona-Glen Ridge ice hockey team opened its season with a 5-2 victory over West Essex Saturday at Codey Arena.

Dominick Pandiscia scored three of the five goals for VGR, which put the game away with the last two goals in the final period to extend a 3-2 lead. Jack Lonsinger's power play goal with assists from Will Benson and Zach Gold gave Verona a 4-2 lead. Pandiscia's third goal made it 5-2, with an assist from Rowan Brennan.

Evan Twitchell's goal in the first period had given VGR a 2-0 lead. Brennan and Benson each finished with three assists. Keith Juros of Verona-Glen Ridge made 27 saves.

West Essex (1-1), which was playing its second game in two days, got 28 saves from Zach Jewett. Joe Namyotov and Alex Laglia scored the Knights' goals. Gil Prial, Antonio DiMeola and Luca Infusino had West Essex assists.
