Icing on the Cake: Giving a Memorable Wedding Gift

June 24, 2014 at 3:28 PM

I love weddings!

Each year around this time, we welcome wedding guests to Enchantments looking for that special, unique gift.  Every so often, they will indulge us with some touching love stories or a clue on what they want to impress the new couple with: a memorable wedding gift.

Although these days it seems more common to simply write a check or browse the online wedding registry for ideas, neither seems to be our customers' only choice.  After all, when it comes to weddings, something always speaks to our hearts wanting to be more elaborate, to express our best wishes. A check simply won't do that -- not unless something else is added.

Just last month, a father of the bride came in looking for a music box. I could only imagine that in the box, he would probably add a check, maybe a piece of heirloom jewelry, or even a loving note. My job was to help him find that special box, the one with the right music. I was delighted that the father let me know the family was of Irish descent. Together, we decided on a carved wooden box with the beautiful Irish wedding song.

A seemingly ordinary item can become very special when you add a personal touch. If you are a close family member of the bride or the groom, and have a chance to contribute to the decor, a pretty frame to dress up an old family picture may become a cherished gift. It is very popular these days to display childhood pictures of the bride or the groom in the wedding hall. I often also suggest a stained glass box with a picture frame on the lid. It's perfect to insert the couple's wedding invitation or their picture in the frame while the box could store mementos. This gift would surely be remembered for years to come.

A wedding is usually a happy reunion of family members. It is an occasion to deepen the family roots and honor their heritage, not only for one family, but for both the families of both the bride and the groom.

When I learned my niece was going to be married into a Jewish family, and have the ceremony be officiated by a rabbi, I decided on a wedding mezuzah along with a pair of personalized champion glasses as their gift. In this arrangement, they could keep the shattered glass in the mezuzah, and use the personalized pair to toast with their guests and later keep as mementos.

In many cases, the Old World wisdom still remains:  something old, something new; something borrowed, and something blue. A handmade bowl with a pair of elaborate patterned vintage serving pieces makes a wonderful set for a new couple. If you want a piece of pottery to say more, our talented potter, Carol Harris, innovated an idea to  press heirloom lace patterns onto the design of a large serving bowl. This, in my option, makes the perfect wedding bowl.

A wedding is a magnet of happiness.  It draws you in, no matter if you know the wedding couple or not. These days, I find myself looking through my jewelry cases, eyeing those beautiful pieces with different shades of blues, wondering who would be the next lucky bride.

It is truly a privilege to witness a ceremony of a lifetime commitment, and to be a contributing part of the new couple's next journey, no matter if you plan to attend in person or not. Your presence would be noted, especially with a thoughtfully selected wedding gift.
