I'm running for the Westfield Board of Education

August 5, 2014 at 9:32 AM

My name is David Sexton and I’m running for a seat on the Westfield Board of Education.

One of the things I believe is that today’s kids are going to need a strong understanding of how to incorporate technology in their lives and careers.

To my mind, technology should be as essential a part of the school day as reading, writing and arithmetic. More than just knowing how to use a computer or configure a smart phone, kids are going to need to know how to adapt.

Let’s face it – technology is changing our lives all the time and our kids are going to need the skills to keep up.

I’m pleased that the Westfield school district has already two Master Technology teachers. I think this is a step in the right direction. I think we will need to do more though. I think that just as nearly every job involves some kind of interaction with technology, every school day should likewise incorporate technology thoughtfully into our kid’s lives so that it becomes second nature.

If elected, I would like to bring my career experience in developing software for financial services to help plan Westfield next steps of using technology in the classroom. Having both a background in teaching as well as extensive experience in building software, I think I’m well prepared to bring relevant thinking and approaches to technology to the Westfield schools.

One practical step that I would suggest is for the schools to sponsor an annual technology fair that would showcase the best of our teaching practices and our student’s work. Similar to an art exposition or science fair, an event surrounding technology would help bring focus to this important discipline. It would get our kids thinking about how technology affects their individual plans and dreams; it would get them thinking like a technologist.

If elected to the board I would look for other practical opportunities to help strengthen the teaching of technology in our schools. Getting our kids to use technology intelligently doesn’t necessarily have to be more expensive, but it does require active planning and good choices.

Please consider voting for me, David Sexton, this fall for the Westfield Board of Education. I’ll do my best to help plan Westfield’s next steps in addressing the challenges of the future.
