SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Bunny's Restaurant will be hosting the second annual “In The Line Of Duty” fundraising event on Saturday night, April 12, to benefit the Police Unity Tour. Last year’s event was a huge success, and this year looks to be even bigger.
There is no cost to attend. Bunny's will donate a percentage of the bar's earnings. Also, there will be an auction of many items and services that have been donated for this event. The money raised will go to the Unity Tour, which is a registered non-profit organization.
The Police Unity Tour is a charity bike ride, done by police officers, for the purpose of bringing awareness to the dangers officers face every day as well as to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington DC. Adrian Acevedo from the South Orange Police Department helped organize the event and will be riding in the Unity Tour.
“Our motto is, ‘We ride for those who died',”, Acevedo said. “On May 5, we will leave East Hanover, on a four-day ride to Washington D.C., covering over 300 miles. It started out in 1997, here in NJ, with only 18 officers. Now, we will roll into D.C. with over 1,500 riders.”
To date the group has raised over $14 Million. The donations have paid for a complete restoration of the memorial walls, on which almost 20,000 names are engraved, all officers who've died in the line of duty. They have also been instrumental in the building of the National Law Enforcement Museum and of course, providing assistance to families of fallen officers.
“This is my eighth time participating in the ride,” Acevedo said. “I started in 2005. I missed one year because I was run over by a car while on duty, it was an up close and personal reminder of how easy it is to be injured or killed at work. It goes without saying that the ride is challenging but it's a small sacrifice compared to that which other officers have made.“
