In Wake of Crumbs Closings, Cake Boss Says Cupcakes Aren't a Fad

July 8, 2014 at 9:44 PM

WESTFIELD, NJ — In an interview on Fox Business Network Tuesday, Buddy Valastro, star of TLC’s “Cake Boss” and owner of Carlo’s Bake Shops, said he doesn’t believe that cakes and cupcakes are a fad, despite the sudden closings of Crumbs Bake Shops on Monday.

“I think operationally their model was a little flawed,” he said of Crumbs. “I didn’t like the fact that they weren’t baking on premise … When you don’t bake on premise, you know, this stuff has got a shelf life.”

Valastro opened a Carlo’s Bake Shop in Downtown Westfield last September a block away from a Crumbs and steps from Bovella’s Pastry Shoppe, sparking outrage among some Bovella’s loyalists. All three shops were known for their cakes and cupcakes. Carlo’s and Bovella’s also offer Italian pastries.
